Breiðafjörður is the home of the White tailed eagle, Puffin and numerous seabird species. You can see thousands of passing migrants on their way to arctic breeding grounds, both in the spring and in the autumn. These include Red Knot and Brent Geese.

The Breiðafjörður Bay Circle gives you an opportunity to study nature´s wonders and the birdlife from land, sea, shores, cliffs and islands. Seals are common along the shores, as well as arctic foxes.
Breiðafjörður Bay Circle streches from West Iceland, from the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula to the western most point of Europe, Bjargtangar of Látrabjarg in the Westfjords .

Start your bird trail in West Iceland at the Snæfellsnes peninsula and Snæfellsnes National Park. Travel through Breiðafjörður bay and enjoy the beautiful nature and birdlife in Dalir and Reykhólar area and do not forget to visit Flatey and the islands of Breiðafjörður.

Continue to the enormous bird cliff Látrabjarg and Bjargtangar, the western most point of Europe. Land meets sea head-on at the 14 kilometre long cliff of Látrabjarg, one of the world’s largest seabird colonies. The steep cliffs, small population and fertile seas make the region a birdwatcher’s paradise as the cliffs are occupied by millions of seabirds. Látrabjarg is the largest bird cliff in the North Atlantic; it is up to 444 metres high and there one can easily approach the Puffins. You also find Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes and Fulmars by the thousands in the area. On your way visit Vatnsfjörður nature reserve in Barðaströnd, as well as everything else the wild Westfjords have to offer.

We recommend that you take the Breiðafjörður Bay Circle and the ferry Baldur makes it possible for you to add this loop to your bird watching tour around Iceland.
